Exercise Sheets

An exercise sheet is a rug that only covers your horse's back and is ideal for keeping your horse warm while working or hacking on cold days. Exercise sheets are designed to keep the back and the kidneys of your horse warm and dry without causing your horse to over-heat through exercise.

When a horse exercises, they can become hot and sweaty very quick. When they become like this on cold days, it doesn't take long for the chill to set in. By using an exercise sheet, the risks of this happening are reduced. If your horse is wearing a full rug when exercising on a cold day, they may become too hot. An exercise sheet doesn't provide the same coverage as the usual rug, therefore allowing air to the skin to prevent them over-heating. Whilst allowing for this, the exercise sheet is also keeping the essential areas warm, so your horse can exercise no matter how cold it is.

Like many horse rugs, an exercise sheet can also be found in many forms. An exercise sheet doesn't just have to be used to keep your horse warm whilst hacking on cold days. Some, for example, can be waterproof. These help to keep your horse dry when out hacking in rainy weather.

One type of exercise sheet is similar to a fly rug. When hacking in warm weather, your horse can still be irritated by flies and midges, which drives them mad. This particular exercise sheet is made of a mesh material to allow air to flow to the skin, keeping them cool while protecting them from those bugs.

Another type of exercise sheet has been specifically designed to wear for competitions. Competition Sheets have a specific saddle cut to aid presentation. Some also come in Hi-Viz or with reflective strips for safety when hacking out on the road.

A typical exercise sheet should fit comfortably on your horse. They usually come with touch tape closures (similar to Velcro) by the withers for quick and easy putting on and removal, and a fillet string under the tail to help keep it in place and to ensure your horse's comfort.
