Stable Rugs
A stable rug is something that needs to be included in every collection of horse rugs. Stable rugs are designed to keep your horse warm whilst they are in their stable, whether they are in there all day or just over night.
Like turnout rugs, stable rugs can come with different thicknesses for different seasons. A lightweight stable rug will have up to and around 100 grams, whereas medium weight stable rugs will usually have 150 to 250 grams of fill. Heavyweight stable rugs will have 300 grams up.
A heavyweight stable rug is adequate enough to keep your horse warm and cosy in his stable, but sometimes the winter nights can turn bitterly cold. If your horse is still feeling chilled during the night, it is not uncommon to layer your stable rug with another rug such as fleece rugs. Layering is a great way to keep the warmth generated by the body closer to the skin, allowing them to preserve their own heat.
Lightweight stable rugs keep the chill off your horse during the slightly warmer nights. Even though the day may be warm, the temperature drops dramatically during the night.
Stable rugs are designed for warmth and comfort, much like a duvet. They are soft and should mould nicely around the horse's body. It may even come complete with a neck cover. These are called Combo stable rugs. Neck covers can also be purchased separately and are fitted to the stable rug with attachments.
The material of a stable rug is NOT waterproof. This is because a stable rug is not designed to be used outside like a turnout rug. For turning the horse out, the rug should be changed to a suitable turnout rug or other horse rug.
Stable rugs aren't just ideal for keeping your horse warm either. Using a stable rug while your horse is in helps to keep their coat clean, preventing stable stains, and is also a good way of keeping their coat flat and shiny. This means every morning you will be greeted by a warm, clean and presentable horse.
