Turnout Rugs

Turnout rugs are a must for any horse. They help to protect your horse from the outside elements, as well as helping to keep them warm. They come in different thicknesses too, allowing them to deal with what ever weather is thrown at them, come rain or shine.

These horse rugs can vary in design. A turnout rug can come with an attached neck or hood, called Combos. The neck cover/hood can also be detachable, giving you the choice of what coverage you prefer. Turnout rugs also come in heavyweight, medium weight or lightweight depending on what season you want it for. The fill of these turnout rugs will vary from no fill for a lightweight turnout, to 550g in a heavyweight turnout.

Sometimes the weather can turn bitterly cold, and even though you may have the heaviest turnout rug, your horse may still feel the cold. If this is the case, it is not uncommon to place a second rug, such as fleece rugs or a summer sheets, underneath. Layering helps to trap air closer to skin, preserving a lot more body heat.

A lightweight turnout rug is light and designed for the warmer months. Its fill ranges from no fill to 150g. These offer a minimal amount of warmth, which makes them great for summer and prevents your horse from over-heating. A medium weight turnout rug is for the spring and autumn months. These are awkward periods of the year where heavyweights are too heavy, and lightweight are too light, allowing your horse to feel the cold. Mediums have a fill between 150g and 250g, making them just right for these times of year.

Turnout rugs are usually made from synthetic material that allows it to have RipStop protection. This stops a tiny tear from becoming a huge rip, a feature that is essential if your horse pulls and tugs on it. The synthetic material also aids towards waterproofing on a turnout rug, helping to keep your horse dry.

Making sure that your turnout rug fits properly is essential. If your rug is too big, it gives it room to move, causing rubbing on your horse's shoulders and withers, creating sores and making them uncomfortable. Choosing a turnout rug that fits well ensures that your horse remains comfortable.

All the straps and fittings on a turnout rug should be checked regularly for any damage, and your horse and rug checked daily. It is also advised that your turnout rug be reproofed and cleaned by a professional cleaner before the start of the next season to ensure that your horse gets the best out it.
