Help & Info:
When contemplating a camping trip, there are numerous factors you need to take into consideration. The first, and most important, is how many people are intended to come? Have a count. There could be just you and a partner, or there could be you and two or three other friends Two families
All these things
will determine exactly the kind of camping trip that is appropriate for you, and
the size and style of tent that you will need.
For example, there may only be two of you planning a hiking trip across Dartmoor
in Devon, competing in the ‘Ten Tor Challenge’ – an annual event usually held on
a bank holiday weekend in May – and the routes range from 35 miles to 55 miles
across the moors, depending on age and experience. Even though people race to be
the first to cross the finish line at the last check-point, this isn’t the idea
of the challenge. The challenge is about endurance and survival, and seeing as
the weather is so unpredictable, from coating the hills in four feet of snow one
year, to a sweltering 26 degrees the next, your chosen equipment is important.
Obviously for a trip like this, your cheap tent needs to be of a high quality
that can withstand the different weather conditions that are thrown your way. It
also needs to be small and light, seeing as you will need to carry it with you
whilst hiking. Dome tents and pop-up tents are a favourite for these kinds of
activities as they are also quick and easy to erect.
But a camping holiday like this will not be ideal for a family. A dog, maybe . . .
Now, a family camping holiday; ensure the location you choose has lots of activities to do, especially for children, to keep everyone entertained and happy. Choosing a random field in the middle of nowhere for a week is not many people’s idea of fun. The cheap tent you choose will also have to be one that can adequately fit everyone and their belongings, and bear in mind that the larger the family and the longer you stay, the more luggage there will be. A favourite type of family tent is one that has separate bedrooms. Many people with a family of six, for example, often buy an 8 berth tent just so they have that extra bit of space for their bags.
Or maybe, if you
are a group of friends enjoying a weekend together, a large communal tent would
be better suited. A couple of examples are Bell tents or Tepees which consist of
one room for everything.
Here are just a few of the basic equipment that you may need, again
depending on the type of holiday you are planning:
- Sleeping Bag - Double or single?
- Airbed - If this fits in your tent. Also take into consideration how you would inflate your airbed. Would it be with a manual pump, or electric, and if so how would you supply power to your pump?
- Camping Mat - If an airbed is not ideal then these can be equally comfortable.
- Chairs - These can come in many forms, including canvas folding chairs which are light & durable.
- Tables
- Cutlery
- Adequate storage for food
- Water containers
- Lighting - i.e. torches and lamps
- Mallet for staking down your tent pegs
Most campsites now provide basic amenities, with shower and toilet blocks available, and some even have power points where you can plug in and charge electrical items. If, however, you intend on taking any electrical goods, be sure to research your chosen camp site first, to ensure they offer this.
