Seasonal Affective Disorder

SAD, or the `Winter Blues`, is officially recognised by Doctors and Psychiatrists as a medical condition that is thought to affect 2 million people in the UK and Ireland, and over 12 million across Northern Europe.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Lethargy, lacking in energy, unable to carry out a normal routine
  • Sleep problems, finding it hard to stay awake during the day, but having disturbed nights
  • Loss of libido, not interested in physical contact.
  • Anxiety, inability to cope
  • Social problems, irritability, not wanting to see people
  • Depression, feelings of gloom and despondency for no apparent reason
  • Craving for carbohydrates and sweet foods, leading to weight gain

How SAD is Best Treated

Previous treatment for depression, and especially SAD, involved the use of medication.  However, in recent years research across the world has shown that SAD sufferers responded, often quite dramatically, to treatment with light.  Now light therapy is considered the most effective treatment.

Lack of light causes an increase in the production of Melatonin (the hormone that makes us sleepy at night), and a reduction of Serotonin, the lack of which causes depression. The exposure to bright light therapy reverses the process, with the additional benefit of being drug free.

By providing summertime levels of light during the winter you can successfully alleviate the symptoms of SAD, with the result that former sufferers can lead a normal, happier life and beat the Winter Blues. In fact almost everyone can benefit from increased energy levels when using a SAD Light box.

*SAD Light Therapy products are entirely safe to use for the majority of people, and if you are generally healthy you should have no problem using one. However, in some instances we advise you to consult your doctor/medical practitioner before you start using a SAD Light box.  You should always consult your doctor for the diagnosis of Seasonal Affective Disorder; or if you:

  • suffer or suffered with severe depression
  • Hypersensitive to light (eg; diabetics and epileptics)
  • suffer eye complaints (ie cataracts or glaucoma)
  • On specific medication (ie; certain antidepressants, psychotropic drugs or malaria tablets)
  • Have high blood pressure

Starting your light therapy treatment is as easy as flicking a switch and you should start to feel a benefit within 7-10 days of using a SAD Light box.

A Sad Light Box is just the thing you need if you suffer with SAD or 'the winter blues'. A Sad Light Box is a light simulator that produces 10,000 lux of light (Lux is used to measure the amount of light). A typical sunny day produces approximately 50,000 lux, whereas a regular light bulb can only produce 500 lux.

A Sad Light Box can help to replace the lux that you wouldn't otherwise geton a dark and dreary day or when working in an office away from any window. A Sad Light Box can sit perfectly on your work desk or in your home, and can help you to beat those winter blues no matter your schedule.

A Sad Light Box can help to relieve the symptoms of SAD, such as lethargy, sleeping problems and difficulties in staying awake during the day, anxiety, loss of libido, irritability, depression, social problems, and a craving for carbohydrates and sweet food. So, how can a Sad Light Box can help with these?

Using a Sad Light Box helps to reduce the levels of Serotonin which causes depression, and Melatonin which makes us feel tired. This is a normal process that occurs during a summer day, but one that sometimes needs help during the winter months. This is where a Sad Light Box is often needed.

The use of a Sad Light Box is completely safe to use, however, it is advised to seek medical help in the diagnosis of Seasonal Affective Disorder. A majority of people have no problems when using their Sad Light Box and find they are generally healthier and happier throughout their normal days.
